Marble vs Granite vs Quartz: What Is the Difference?

How the three materials differ in composition, durability, maintenance and the way they age in real homes.

Composition

Marble and granite are natural stone cut from quarried blocks. Engineered quartz is manufactured from crushed quartz bound with resin and pigment, which is why its pattern is more consistent slab to slab.

Durability in daily use

Granite handles heat well and resists scratching. Quartz resists staining and moisture but is sensitive to sustained heat. Marble is the softest of the three and reacts to acids, which shows as etching rather than staining.

Maintenance

Granite benefits from periodic sealing checks. Quartz needs only mild cleaners and heat protection. Marble needs the most care: quick cleanup of acidic spills, pH neutral cleaners and realistic expectations about patina.

How they age

Marble develops a lived in surface that some owners like and others do not. Granite stays close to its original look with routine care. Quartz holds its finish well but can show heat damage that is difficult to reverse.

Choosing for a specific room

Kitchens favor granite and quartz. Bathrooms handle all three when products are kept off the surface. Outdoor areas favor granite because many quartz products are not rated for direct sun.
